Abortion

Abortion is medically defined as the termination of a pregnancy by various means. It is not a simple or easy decision to make, but only you can ultimately decide what is right for you in the long run. As well, abortion is an exceedingly controversial issue, so you may find your own opinions being skewered by those around you. If you are seriously considering an abortion, go to see an impartial doctor and do some research to make sure whatever you decide is in your best interests.

There are two main types of abortions.

The medical abortion is an option for those in the first 10 weeks of their pregnancy and it involves taking a few different types of pills.

(It must be said that a medical abortion and emergency contraceptives are not the same thing.)

The next alternative is surgical abortion, and it involves a medical procedure performed by a surgeon. This is the more common type of abortion and takes usually no more than 10 minutes to complete.

While it varies across Canada, the coverage for the procedure is usually covered in the Maritimes:

In Nova Scotia, there are no private abortion clinics, but hospital procedures are fully covered.

In New Brunswick, the hospitals are fully covered but at the Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton, payment is required.

In PEI, there are no hospitals or clinics which perform the procedure, but doctors may pre-authorize and approve an out-of-province procedure to be fully covered.
